Longlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection 2026
The rural terrain of John Challis’s second collection provides a new lens for exploring history, class and work, our relationship to the natural world, and cycles of growth and decay. Much of his debut collection The Resurrectionists concerned working lives in the city: his father a London cabbie, his grandfather a market porter. Here his focus shifts to a crumbling stately home in Northumberland brought to life through the voices of the grounds as well as those who inhabit it and maintain it. London is at a distance. We find ourselves beyond, in backyards, on motorways, in fields, searching for the green patch in Kent, where an East End family picked hops in the summer.
Despatches from the early years of fatherhood reflect on ageing, loss and patience. Poems set in the American west consider the idea of freedom. And on the eve of his execution, thief and folk hero Jack Sheppard flees into the forest of his mind. Confronting the tension between wanting to belong and the desire to escape, these poems acknowledge and reckon with the people and places that haunt us.
'...for Challis, when thoughts crystallise they do so with force [...] These poems are sharp and satisfying – and can be consumed in stolen moments of parental calm. While Challis’s 2021 debut collection, The Resurrectionists, dwelled in the working lives of the city – a London cabbie father, a market porter grandfather; cockle pickers, butchers and barrow boys – this second book has a greener and grander canvas.' – Jade Cuttle, The Observer (Poetry Books of the Month)
‘Here is articulation and exhibition of things described that manages to enter almost the mythic in world-building. […] The Green Parcel does not lend itself to easy summation, and nor should it. Poetry of this consistently high quality is for the reader far more than the critic. I stand by my recommendation to judge it by its cover because its cover tells us that it is a poetry collection by John Challis, and that means we need to read it.’ – Patrick Davidson Roberts, Wild Court
‘This substantial collection represents a shift in the poet’s focus, as well as a broaden-ing of his lens and concerns, while also being deeply personal. There are some close, elegant poems about fatherhood, such as ‘Kindling’, as well as poems that capture intimate moments, such as the gorgeous and questioning ‘North Shields Nocturn’.' – Will Mackie, New and Recent Poetry from the North: Summer 2026, on The Green Parcel
‘John Challis’s second collection examines the lives of those who both work on, and are part of, the landscape. […] A fantastic collection which interrogates belonging while recognising that one’s “green and pleasant land / is the stuff of poetry”.’ – Shash Trevett, Poetry Book Society Summer 2026 Bulletin, on The Green Parcel

Shopbeschreibung
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
