Daphne es una hermosa joven eslava que ha venido a la capital desde el norte y extravía un hermoso diamante que es encontrado por Li-Ming, quien, en principio, pretende apropiárselo, pero decide someterse a la voluntad del rey.
Mientras tanto, Daphne también ha acudido al rey, solicitando la devolución de la joya. Shisán les propone a cada uno, por separado, resolver un enigma para solucionar su conflicto.
A ellos, el acertijo del otro les parece muy sencillo, aunque no el propio, y casi de inmediato encuentran la respuesta, pero, cuando intentan presentar su solución ante el rey, interviene una serie una serie de xniús —enemigos del rey—, que se interponen entre ellos impidiendo que entreguen la solución a tiempo.
Los caminos de Daphne y Li-Ming se separan, pero no por ello desaparece su compromiso con Shisán, quien les advirtió que la ley no cambiaría.
Daphne ha regresado al norte y Li-MIng es enviado a proteger las fronteras. Cada uno de ellos se ha convertido para el otro en un mero recuerdo, pero las joyas que que porta Daphne le recuerdan el compromiso que desea cumplir a toda costa.
Li-Ming, por su parte, ha decidido renunciar al diamante ya que considera que poco o nada puede hacer para recuperarlo.
Mientras tanto, Dirén, enemigo jurado de Shisán ha reclutado a un enorme ejército de caballería que atacará Palacio y llegará incluso a la sala del trono. El rey deberá defender Palacio contando casi solamente con sus jardineros y una docena de hombres.
Los resultados de esa batalla afectarán a todos.
En la novela existen momentos de gran tensión, como podemos leer en el siguiente fragmento:
"
Con todo y su resolución, no pudo evitar un sobresalto cuando una horrible hiena antropomorfa, erguida sobre sus cuartos traseros, le cerró el paso. Los ojos de la fiera lo miraban amenazantes, como retándolo.
Lesé (垃圾) aguantó la mirada escalofriante del engendro aquel, aparentando un valor que no era tal, sino fruto de la convicción de ser llamado ante el maestro, del que, sin duda, aquella visión sería un guardián.
Transcurrieron segundos que parecieron años; ni el burdégano avanzaba ni la fiera embestía, como si el tiempo estuviera congelado.
Si el audaz aventurero podía flanquear a aquel portero nada podría detenerlo, pero ¿cómo hacerlo? La bestia lucía atemorizante, aunque parecía tranquila y sin ánimo de atacar, al menos no de inmediato. Estaba midiendo al recién llegado, como retándolo; un titubeo y todo acabaría.
El duelo no fue físico, sino mental, Lesé (垃圾), lleno de dudas, intentaba descifrar al bicho; mientras
tanto aquel aprovechaba para detectar todas las debilidades del humano que exudaba adrenalina, percibida por el finísimo olfato de la hiena.
Luego de examinar al recién llegado, la hiena hizo un gesto de desdén sacudiendo la garra derecha cerca de su cabeza, indicándole que se deshiciera de algo.
Lesé (垃圾) no parecía entender, pero el animalazo se tocó el cráneo para indicar que hiciera lo mismo. Él por fin comprendió; sacó de entre sus cabellos una pluma blanca que hacía tiempo ocultaba y, al verla, el monstruo volvió a indicar con la garra que se deshiciera de ella. Cuando Lesé (垃圾 ) la arrojó lejos de sí, un viento helado la elevó fuera de la cañada hasta que se perdió de vista.
Con ese gesto terminó el silencioso y tenso escarceo y el cuadrúpedo hizo un ademán con el pestilente hocico al tiempo que con un gruñido sibilante dijo: "Sígueme".
El asombrado Lesé (垃圾) continuó su descenso por la ruta que le señalaba el espectro"
