There is a small scuff and light marks to the bottom corner of the front cover. The back cover, although white, is very clean. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. No reading creases to the spine. Spine flat. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Paper stock lightly tanned as usual. No foxing. Pages clean. No creases. No tears. ***231 pages plus five pages of publisher's adverts at the back of the book. 188mm x 127mm. ***'x'. (Quote taken from the back cover) ***'B. Traven ( Bruno Traven in some accounts) was the pen name of a novelist, presumed to be German, whose real name, nationality, date and place of birth and details of biography are all subject to dispute. It has been claimed that it would be the pseudonym of one Frans Blom, an explorer of Mayan culture. One certainty about Traven's life is that he lived for years in Mexico, where the majority of his fiction is also set - including "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1927), the film adaptation of which won three Academy Awards in 1949.' (Wiki) ***'"Government" vividly contrasts the dignity of the Indians against the cynicism of the politicians and bureaucrats, and reaches a moving climax as ten thousand Indians rise to defy the government. (Quote taken from the back cover) ***A second printing of the first UK paperback edition - all editions of B. Traven's work are becoming increasingly hard to find now, especially in nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Artikel-Nr. Softcover. Zustand: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Used book which has been read but is still in great condition. No notes or highlighting. Some tanning to pages. About the book >.>.> In the 1930s B. Traven wrote an epic of the birth of the Mexican revolution in what have become known as the "Jungle Novels." Government is the first of the six novels that comprise the series. Depicting the political corruption that infected even the smallest villages in Mexico, the novel tells the story of Don Gabriel, a minor government functionary who has a virtual license to steal from the Indian village where he is secretaryexcept that the Indians have nothing to steal. By chance he finds an opportunity in the labor agent business, shanghaiing luckless Indians into debt-slavery so that he can ship them off to work in the great mahogany plantations owned by foreign capital. The novel reaches a moving climax in a clash of cultures between the simple dignity of the illiterate Indians and the cynicism and corruption of the politicians and petty bureaucrats. Artikel-Nr. Hardcover. Early edition. 254pp. Small quarto [24 cm] Light bluish gray cloth with red ink stamped titles on the backstrip and front board. Very good. The spine and areas of the covers are mildly faded. The cloth at the ends of the spine and at the corners of the covers is a bit frayed. B. Traven is one of the most mysterious figures of 20th-century literature. His true identity is still subject to much doubt. Although Traven claimed to be an American, his most famous works were first published in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s. Nothing definitive is known about Traven's beginnings. Never the less, Traven's novels have been translated into more than 30 languages and they have sold more than 25 million copies. Artikel-Nr. 39512
