Buchbeschreibung "Desertification is a major global threat and over 250 million people are directly affected by it. Due to this, addressing desertification remains a top most priority of the global community. The number of actors involved in Global Environmental Governance (GEG) has increased significantly in recent years. However, the national governments continue to be the nodal points in protecting environment. Artikel-Nr. Concept-9788180698484

Buchbeschreibung Tectum Verlag Jul 2011, 2011. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - In this day and age, it is a well-known fact that the interrelated processes of desertification, climate change and biodiversity loss are negatively affecting ecosystems upon which societies depend for their livelihoods. At the same time, human's pressure on natural resources such as land and water is steadily increasing. Serious challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, conflict and migration arise from these human-environmental interactions. Against this background, the present volume explores the relationship between the global governance of desertification and climate change. The central question it addresses is how the 'United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification' (UNCCD) can streamline its policies and better integrate the biophysical and socio-economic aspects of desertification, land degradation and drought into the ongoing climate change negotiation process. Particular emphasis is given to understanding the role of ecosystem-based approaches and payments for ecosystem services in promoting synergies between relevant actors. Furthermore, a case study of the biofuels sector will be used to demonstrate the interdependent feedback loops between human well-being, energy security, food security and environmental change. 173 pp. Englisch. Buchbeschreibung MIT University Press Group Ltd Jul 2014, 2014. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - Transparency -- openness, secured through greater availability of information -- is increasingly seen as part of the solution to a complex array of economic, political, and ethical problems in an interconnected world. The 'transparency turn' in global environmental governance in particular is seen in a range of international agreements, voluntary disclosure initiatives, and public-private partnerships. This is the first book to investigate whether transparency in global environmental governance is in fact a broadly transformative force or plays a more limited, instrumental role. After three conceptual, context-setting chapters, the book examines ten specific and diverse instances of 'governance by disclosure.' These include state-led mandatory disclosure initiatives that rely on such tools as prior informed consent and monitoring, measuring, reporting and verification; and private (or private-public), largely voluntary efforts that include such corporate transparency initiatives as the Carbon Disclosure Project and such certification schemes as the Forest Stewardship Council. The cases, which focus on issue areas including climate change, biodiversity, biotechnology, natural resource exploitation, and chemicals, demonstrate that although transparency is ubiquitous, its effects are limited and often specific to particular contexts. The book explores in what circumstances transparency can offer the possibility of a new emancipatory politics in global environmental governance. Englisch. Artikel-Nr. 9780262526180

Buchbeschreibung Nomos Verlagsges.MBH & Co Aug 2005, 2005. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - In 2003, UN Secretary-General Annan appealed to the international community to reform the United Nations system. A high-level panel was established to elaborate proposals, which shall be presented to the General Assembly in 2005. In this context, French President Chirac called for establishing a new United Nations Environment Organization (UNEO), to evolve from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). France set up a working group on this issue, consisting of 26 countries and the EU Commission, and including both supporters and critics of the initiative. The aim is to work out a concept for a UNEO by 2005. In parallel, continued efforts are made to strengthen UNEP. Reform aims at enhancing its financial basis, expanding the membership of the UNEP Governing Council to all UN Member States and increasing the activities in the fields of science and capacity building. The present volume, which consists of a series of contributions by internationally renounced authors, analyzes gaps and weaknesses of the present system of global environmental governance, and highlights the various aspects, challenges and necessities, of a political and scientific nature alike, of both reforming UNEP and creating a new environment organization in context of the major United Nations reform effort.'Among the authors are: Klaus Töpfer, James Gustave Speth, Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Peter M. Haas, Paul Wapner, Dirk Messner, Udo E. Simonis, Frank Biermann, Meinhard Schulz-Baldes, Richard G. Tarasofsky, Maria Ivanova, Denys Gauer, Hermann E. Ott, Johannah Bernstein, John Ashton, Kerstin Müller, Reinhard Loske, Janos Bogardi, Adnan Amin. Preface by Jürgen Trittin, German Minister for the Environment. 310 pp. Englisch.
