This book examines how nations and other key participants in the global community address problems requiring collective action. The global community has achieved some successes, such as eradicating smallpox, but other efforts to coordinate nations? actions, such as the reduction of drug trafficking, have not been sufficient. This book identifies the factors that promote or inhibit successful collective action at the regional and global level for an ever-growing set of challenges stemming from augmented cross-border flows associated with globalization. Modern principles of collective action are identified and applied to a host of global challenges, including promoting global health, providing foreign assistance, controlling rogue nations, limiting transnational terrorism, and intervening in civil wars. Because many of these concerns involve strategic interactions where choices and consequences are dependent on one?s own and others? actions, the book relies, in places, on elementary game theory that is fully introduced for the uninitiated reader. Inhaltsangabe: Although the global community has achieved some success in endeavors such as eradicating smallpox, efforts to coordinate nations' actions in others--such as the reduction of drug trafficking--have not been sufficient. Identifying the factors that promote, or inhibit, successful collective action for an ever-growing set of challenges associated with globalization, Todd Sandler applies them to promoting global health, providing foreign assistance, controlling rogue nations, limiting transnational terrorism, and intervening in civil wars.
Book Description: This book explains why the global community has been successful in correcting some recent large-scale problems, but has failed in addressing others. The book discusses challenges drawn from the fields of global health, security, the environment, and governance. The analysis reaches from antiobiotic-resistant microbes to greenhouse gases, from civil wars to international terrorism, and from the polluted atmospheres of cities to the depths of outer space. In the process, the reader learns what ties together seemingly different problems, and what distinguishes seemingly similar concerns. The book is intended for a wide audience drawn from the social and policy sciences.

Buchbeschreibung Peter Gmbh Lang Aug 2010, 2010. Buch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - Energy spurs social and economic development and has multiple effects on the ecological and social environment of societies. Energy access for socially equitable development, energy security for economic growth, and the mitigation of climate change all represent issues of sustainable development. Energy markets, however, fail to set incentives right. Based on research in five sustainable energy-related global policy networks and on conducted expert interviews, this study analyzes the effectiveness of global policy networks and aims to identify instruments of effective global environmental governance. In conclusion, the study will draft a strategy for network governance how to reconcile long-term and short-term interests by creating integrative sustainable business opportunities. This strategy has to foster collaboration in partnerships and self-organizing dynamics among the network partners. 350 pp. Englisch. Artikel-Nr. 9783631603116
