Through a careful rendering of the text, deciphering its hidden ironies, Mr. Weinberg sees Prométhée as a modern allegory, a parable wrought of allusions, symbols, and images drawn from classical antiquity and calvinist theology, and a multi-leveled sotie à miroirs.

CHAPTER 1
A DIVINE GRATUITY, OR THE MISFORTUNES OF THE ELECT
1. Exposition, Characters, and Literary Climate of the Prométhée
The meaning of the Prométhée logically derives from an exposition which precedes it in the form of a prologue. A sort of slapstick prelude, it is narrated dispassionately, dryly reported without commentary like a fait divers: "On the boulevard which leads from the Madeleine to the Opéra," a fat gentleman drops his handkerchief. A lean man picks it up, runs after the fat one and returns it to him. The fat gentleman gives the lean one a flask with "portable ink," a pen, and an envelope, inviting him to address it to a "name" he knows. After having put a five hundred franc note into the envelope, the fat gentleman slaps the lean one so powerfully that he falls down. The fat gentleman leaves the scene in a cab. Bleeding heavily, the lean man rises again and testily tells the worried audience that he barely felt anything, and asks them if they will please leave him alone. Now the author intervenes with the casual remark that he subsequently learned the fat gentleman was Zeus, the banker. The identity of the ill-treated lean man and that of the "elect" so whimsically chosen is slowly revealed in the sotie's first part ("La moralité privée"); the former is Coclès, the latter Damoclès.
The complex structure of part I, "Chronique de la moralité privée," introduces, one by one, the characters of the sotie. The scene is a Parisian café on the grands boulevards. Chance and necessity are intertwined in the meeting of the garçon, Prometheus, Damoclès, and Coclès. Each character, with the exception of the transcendent "Miglionnaire" Zeus, is given his turn in the limelight: "Histoire du garçon et du Miglionnaire" (304), told by the garçon; "Histoire de Damoclès" (308); "Histoire de Coclès" (310); "Prométhée parle" (313); "Histoire de l'aigle" (314). To this perspectivism corresponds the precipitous action of a farce of errors, interspersed with the protagonists' "stories" or speeches, within the framework of the sections numbered one to four: a dual web of structures illustrating by their very nature the incommunicability of a nigh Kafkaesque morality authored by the "Miglionnaire" Zeus. Part I ends in the midst of confusion and misunderstandings with apocalyptic overtones which will be analyzed in the course of this exegesis.
The intricacies of the Prométhée's dual structure, studied in detail by W. W. Holdheim, are carried over into parts II, III and IV. Part II, "La Détention de Prométhée," Prometheus, denounced by the garçon and imprisoned, receives the garçon, who informs him about the changing fortunes of Damoclès and Coclès. Prometheus feeds his eagle, demonstrating its "morality," in the chapter headed "II faut qu'il croisse et que je diminue." P
