"George Buchanan and His Times" by Peter Hume Brown offers a detailed biographical account of the life and career of George Buchanan (1506-1582), a prominent Scottish humanist scholar, educator, and political theorist. This comprehensive study delves into Buchanan's significant contributions to literature, education, and politics during the tumultuous era of the Scottish Reformation and the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Brown meticulously examines Buchanan's early life, education, and his time spent studying and teaching in France. The book highlights Buchanan's role as a tutor to James VI of Scotland and explores his influential political writings, including his treatise "De Jure Regni apud Scotos," which advocated for limited monarchy and popular sovereignty. Brown contextualizes Buchanan's life within the broader historical, intellectual, and religious currents of 16th-century Europe, providing valuable insights into the cultural and political landscape of Renaissance Scotland.
