Fourth edition (book first published by Richard Griffin as Geological Notices of the Environs of Glasgow, the Shores of the Clyde, and the Island of Arran, 1855), with the ownership inscription of Philip Curnow, Edinburgh, 1949; uncoloured map as frontispiece. James Bryce (1806-1877), an energetic geologist and an Ulster Scot, taught at Glasgow High School; his eldest son, also James Bryce (1838-1922), historian and politician, served as British ambassador to Washington, 1907-13, and was created Viscount Bryce in 1914. Philip Werran Curnow (1912-2000) read Geology at Edinburgh University after the Second World War, and was appointed Curator of Geology at Bristol City Museum; later he taught geology and archaeology at Stonar School, near Bath, to which he donated his own fossil and geology collection.
