Synopsis: North D Street never frightened me-that is what surprises people when I tell them the truth. They expect a story sharpened by sirens and blood, by the hard language of crime, by darkness that announces itself with force. But the darkness I knew was quieter than that. It arrived the way evening does-uninvited yet unquestioned-stretching shadows across cracked sidewalks and leaning porches until you no longer remembered when the light had begun to fade. The street itself was small, walkable in minutes, though no one ever hurried. Old maples buckled the pavement into honest imperfections, and in summer the air carried the scent of cut grass tangled with motor oil, while winter stripped everything down to a sterile stillness that felt less like peace and more like endurance. As a boy, I believed streets were loyal, that houses remembered you, that harm belonged somewhere far away. I was wrong-but not entirely. Because what came for us did not break in like a stranger; it grew beside us, patient and watchful, lingering through scraped knees, first loves, hymns, homework, and the quiet suffering of men who learned to carry pain without naming it. I did not understand then that a place could both raise you and wound you with the same steady hands, or that love could endure long after the people who gave it had changed or gone. I knew only fragments of light-my brother's laughter, my father's strength before it bent under too much weight, my mother's voice before it was reshaped by something we could not fight, and the simple order of porch lights flickering on each night as if the world still made sense. Autobiography: Dr. James M. Copas, LLM., LLM., is a lifelong student of the law, a passionate writer, and a storyteller at heart. Born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio, his journey has taken him through distinguished academic institutions, including Miami University, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Stetson University College of Law, The John Marshall Law School, and the University of Illinois Law School at Chicago, where he pursued advanced legal studies in international law and intellectual property. Yet beyond his accomplishments in law, this book reveals another side of Dr. Copas-one rooted in imagination, faith, and the enduring power of family. Inspired by what he describes as a God-given spark, he brings to life a world where dragons soar, courage is tested, and love remains the greatest force of all. At the heart of his storytelling is a deep devotion to family, especially to his beloved wife, Lynnette, and the joy and wonder of her grandchildren, whose laughter and imagination helped shape the spirit of this tale. Through this work, Dr. Copas invites readers of all ages to rediscover the magic of storytelling, the strength of kindness, and the beauty of shared adventure. This book stands as both a journey into a fantastical world and a reflection of the very real love that inspired it. The author writes stories that explore the intersection of memory, humanity, and the unseen forces that shape both. Drawing inspiration from themes of resilience, faith, and the enduring nature of connection, their work seeks to illuminate the quiet strengths that often go unnoticed in a world driven by power and spectacle. With a deep appreciation for storytelling that blends emotional depth with immersive world-building, the author crafts narratives that linger-not because of their scale, but because of their heart. This work, like many others, is rooted in a belief that stories matter-not only as entertainment, but as vessels of meaning, reflection, and hope. Above all, the author writes with the understanding that even in the darkest of worlds, there is always a light worth protecting-and a fire worth remembering.
