Gambit is an alternate history novel about the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Lieutenant Commander Haruto Ito is a communications officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He is responsible for routing the communications between Admiral Yamamoto and the Kidō Butai, the fleet involved in the attack. Convinced that the coming war is morally wrong and militarily unwinnable he seeks out a member of the British consulate in nearby Yokohama and informs him about the plan and arranges to provide them updated information as it proceeds.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill is a desperate man behind the brave face seen by the world. The Germans have conquered France, bested the British Army in North Africa and are dealing crushing blows to the Russians. Their U-boats are causing catastrophic and unsustainable losses to British shipping in the North Atlantic. If the Americans are not fully engaged in the war against Germany and soon Britian may be forced to come to terms.
President Franklin Roosevelt needs a war with Germany. His legacy will be the savior of western civilization. He knows that given his health and the expected length of that war America’s entry cannot be delayed. If Japan strikes first and American declares war on Japan, he is convinced that Germany will declare war on the United States. When he is made aware of the Japanese plans, he sets in motion as series of secrets, lies, promises and scapegoats to ensure his desired outcome.
