A PID controller, which stands for Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller, is a widely used feedback control system in engineering and automation. It is utilized to control a wide range of processes and systems, from simple to complex, to achieve desired outcomes. PID controllers are effective at reducing errors between the desired set point and the actual output. Similarly, PID controllers are designed to provide stability to a system by regulating its output or process variable. PID controllers offer the flexibility to tune the controller parameters (proportional, integral, and derivative gains) to optimize the control performance for a specific system. Proper tuning can lead to faster response times, reduced overshoot, and improved stability. Even PID controllers are cost-effective and can provide satisfactory control for many systems without the need for more advanced or complex control strategies. In this book, the fundamentals of PID controller and its tuning criteria are considered and verified in a real-time system.
