Johnny Schraeder has the perfect summer planned. At twenty-one he just finished his junior year at the University of Tennessee. Now, with a rebuilt 1971 VW Van, a full tank of gas, a credit card, and three months of freedom, Johnny is ready for the ultimate American road trip: The Smoky Mountains to California beaches with every offroad and unusual roadside attraction in between.

Then he meets Frankie sitting outside his tent at a North Carolina campsite. Johnny figures, with her accent, she's European. She's not. Frankie is from the distant planet Earendel and needs to hitch a ride to Pikes Peak. She's definitely on a mission, and what follows is one of the strangest road trips in American history.

Frankie and Johnny is an offbeat and sometimes dangerous science fiction novella about the absurdity of first contact, the chaos of road trips, and the unexpected friendship between a naive college kid and an alien woman who doesn't understand why humans keep asking her for ID.
