[Bound with:] SCHILLER, Friedrich. The ghost-seer! From the German of Schiller. Part I (of II). [2], 163, [1] pp. As issued by the publisher. Contemporary half tan calf over marbled boards, spine decorated in gilt with gilt-lettered red morocco label, marbled edges and endpapers (extremities rubbed, some wear to lower corners). Text crisp and clean throughout with just some pale foxing to frontispiece and engraved title page as usual. Provenance: unidentified bookplate to front pastedown monogrammed "A.S." and motto "ut vivas vigilia". A very fine copy. ---- FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION (THIRD EDITION OVERALL), with two engraved plates and extensively revised text by Shelley, including a new introduction. This was the first version of the text to include the origin story of the work, in which the guests gathered at Villa Diodati in Switzerland in 1816 were challenged by Lord Byron to all write a ghost story.
