Inhaltsangabe: `Fox gold' is set in the Pennine Hills where in the Parish of Rossall, Young Sam, rising 70, lives and dies. He is a lovable eccentric who considers the weather reports on the radio as meddling with God's business; but it is not he himself who is meddling. He keeps up with the village goings on through his telescope which he has trained on roaming foxes, courting couples and potential thieves, until he finds a new interest in the tenant of one of his cottages, the youngish widow Peggy Fox, whose shining red hair is like a fox's brush. The ups and downs of their confrontations are lovingly and humorously described.

`Nightingale Island' is set in Japan where one man and his dog traverse the country by train to visit an ex-pupil made good. Willoughby, the narrator, is a struggling teacher of English with one ambition, to become a best selling author. After a hilarious evening spent in the Blue Camelia bar where Willoughby is an instant hit with the madame, he is conveyed in a rickety helicopter to Nightingale Island, where he gets involved with the Japanese Mafia and things begin to happen. A really funny novella with many insights into Japanese life.

`Bowl of Roses' is set in Teheran where the narrator falls in with a group of Islamic Marxists and is intent on saving his lover, the charming Feredun, from the secret police by obtaining a scholarship for him in Germany.
