A devastating loss...A heroic act...A life-changing injury
Your scars are badges of honor. Do you laugh at an old campaigner home without his arm? No—you do not! You celebrate his gift to the nation. You buy him a drink. You listen to his stories. Why would I ever be ashamed of a woman who chose to sacrifice herself for a child?
General Richard Fitzwilliam to Miss Catherine Bennet
Mr. Bennet’s sudden death before the Netherfield Ball forced Miss Catherine—no longer Kitty—into employment. She used a seminary connection to secure a governess’s position with one of the ton’s first families. Hardship changed her character. She is now reliable, determined, trustworthy, and more than the pretty face her mother thought would win a husband.
When tragedy strikes in the park, Miss Bennet suffers terrible injuries. Fate brings General Richard Fitzwilliam to her side. Having spent years fighting the Tyrant, he sees past her scars and values her compassion, steadiness, and resilience in the face of devastating obstacles.
Love Blooms for Kitty Bennet and the Colonel
READER ALERT: This 28,000-word novella contains one scene of a violent attack and a description of life-saving surgery.
Author Nicole Clarkston (These Dreams, The Education of Edward Gardiner) notes:
This was a fascinating twist on our conventional tale. The typical formula is always the same: the sensible sister, the clever sister, the beautiful sister- they save the family by marrying a man who must overcome his discomfort with his favored lady's lower station. The "leftover" sisters wait in the wings until their better siblings' new connections make a way for them.
Here we have the opposite. Lydia... LYDIA!!! She turns out just dandy! It is a surprise to see Mrs. Bennet shaken up by life's circumstances and actually doing well by her daughters. Kitty is the remarkable lady here, though. Disfigured and in reduced circumstances, her strength of character and pure heart win her the affections of everyone's favorite Darcy sidekick (with apologies to Charles Bingley).
Silly misunderstandings do not plague this estimable couple. They are intelligent, reasonable people, just as we all should be. Seeing the "sisters least likely" carry the day and become the means of their family's salvation was a treat.
Readers say:
Mary Ann Hannon rates the story five stars and calls it “Intense and insightful.”
Outstanding! One of the very best JAFF books I've ever read: detailed characters, some canon, and many new plots for our favorite P&P characters. He is a very talented author who puts you in the heart of the story. I read it in one day and used several tissues! I couldn't put it down; I HAD to know what happened next!
Roxane Wolff Awards five stars for an “Excellent Book”
A story that leaves me gasping in horror at 'Finis'. I am eager for more! I had wondered at the title: ‘Whose fortune is reversed?’ Just about everybody's! In a believable way, too.
Lifegiggles lauds “Brave Kitty” with five stars
We have a very brave Kitty Bennet who is very loyal and protective. We also have a brave Richard Fitzwilliam, who is proactive and rescues Kitty. Otherwise, she would have been dead—great story, as always, from Jacobson.
