Beschreibung:

Food security has been an important element in deciding on socio-economic development in the country. The World Food Summit, held in Rome in 1996, identified the need for improving food availability and nutrition in developing as well as the developed countries. The World Food Summit ? Five Years Later (WFS-fyl) Conference will be organised in Rome in June 2002 to take stock of changing trends and the possibility of attaining goals as identified at the World Food Summit. The preparatory process for WFS-fyl started early in 2001 and the whole year was basically spent on the preparatory process. It is in this regard that the preparations in India at the NGO level were also focused on various issues relating to Food Security in the country. A Food and Nutrition Survey was carried and benchmarked against the survey conducted in 1992 to identify changes in food habits and nutrition level in the country. These results indicated a wide variation leading to obesity in one area and malnutrition in the other. It is concerning to note that in India in 2001 about 260 million people were below poverty line and about 180 million had some kind of malnutrition. The role of Panchayats in reaching out food to the poor in rural areas was considered an important element. This approach is ridden with various bottlenecks that need administrative, financial and social solutions. The Public Distribution System in the country has been serving the needs in amicable fashion. However, rising food stocks with the Food Corporation of India has caused concern. This book is a compilation of various papers discussed at national consultations in India and the NGOs/CSOs Regional Consultation for Asia Pacific Region during the year 2001. Printed Pages: 286. Buchbeschreibung Oxford Univ Pr, 2012. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Wie neu Leichte Lagerspuren - Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre's 2010-2011 Report on Food Security in South Asia is a valuable contribution towards the conceptual and empirical analysis of food security in South Asia. It analyses the issues of availability and access to food for all South Asians, especially the poor. Ensuring adequate food at affordable prices to all people at all times is the duty of each government. The high prices of food and fuel and economic crisis of recent years have put half a billion South Asians in poverty, millions of children out of school and into work, and over 300 millions of South Asians malnourished. The Report presents critical analyses of food production, distribution, and access for three South Asian countries, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The Report also assesses food security from the perspectives of women and climate change. The Report critically reviews the public food distribution system and social safety net programmes. The Report argues that to give economic growth a human face, South Asia needs to seriously address the effectiveness of its food security initiatives. The objective of all development programmes must be the people and their wellbeing, and food security is the main lifeline of the people. 167 pp. Deutsch. Artikel-Nr. INF1000911098

Buchbeschreibung Springer-Verlag Gmbh Nov 2010, 2010. Buch. Buchzustand: Neu. 235x155x43 mm. Neuware - This book addresses an important topic of food security in South Asia with specific reference to climate change. Of the 1 billion food insecure people in the world, more than 30% are in South Asia. The problem of food insecurity may be exacerbated by the projected climate change especially because of the water scarcity caused by rapid melting of the glaciers in the Himalayas and increase in variability in monsoonal rains and frequency of extreme events. Furthermore, large populations of Bangladesh and other coastal regions may be displaced by sea level rise. 600 pp. Englisch. Artikel-Nr. 9789048195152
