Flat engines have always been different. Low, wide, balanced, distinctive, and sometimes awkward, they shaped some of the most memorable machines in motoring, motorcycling, aviation, and racing history.

The Flat Engine: Balance, Packaging, and the Engines That Kept Their Pistons Low tells the story of boxer engines, horizontally opposed engines, flat-fours, flat-sixes, flat-twelves, air-cooled Volkswagens, Porsche sports cars, Subaru rally icons, BMW boxer motorcycles, Honda touring machines, light aircraft engines, and the engineering compromises that made them fascinating.

Written in clear, plain English, this book explains why engineers used flat engines, what made them smooth, why their low centre of gravity mattered, why their width caused problems, how their sounds became famous, and why only certain manufacturers stayed loyal to the layout. It is a readable history of mechanical character: not a textbook, not a repair manual, and not a celebration of one brand, but a balanced look at the pistons that refused to stand upright.
