"Laura Willis has written a moving account of a life lived well in the service of others. This heartfelt story is one of grace and of the perennial search to find one's way in an often confusing world." —Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House "This is incarnational religion, which you might call Christianity, at its simple and clear best! Readable and personal—but also profound!" —Richard Rohr, Center for Action and Contemplation Laura Willis thought she wanted to be a priest. While she was thinking it through, she began working at a tiny food pantry, and as it grew to feed hundreds, Laura learned about her own hunger for God, realizing her calling card—a bag of groceries—could change lives, including her own. If you asked someone waiting at my office why they were there, they would tell you, “for a bag of groceries.” But I believe most people came because of the love we offered. The food was just a way to get people to walk through the door. In a shabby building, Laura discovered a world of neighbors she never knew: the lonely, unemployed, chronically poor families, and middle-class folks surprised to be struggling in a great recession. And to each, she offered a bag of groceries, a compassionate ear, and a heart of love.

Laura Lapins Willis has been observing people and writing about them since she was 8 years old. She began her career as a journalist, but then moved into the nonprofit world to make a difference in people s lives. Willis has served in a variety of influential roles, including helping found an environmental group in Washington, DC, and work as grant writer and fund-raiser for the University of the South. She and her husband have two sons, and live in Sewanee, Tennessee, where she is known for her work at the Community Action Committee as a community organizer and advocate.
