From the Author:
One day, she remembered that the only person who could make her happy was herself. So she took back her power, re-claimed her place in the world and shined like never before. - Anna Taylor
And so she began . . . again.
There was a time when I felt stuck between worlds that clashed. I asked myself, “Are my best years behind me, or are my worst years behind me? What is still to come, and what can I do to make changes for the better?” I was midway through my life in terms of age and stage, but a few curtains had closed, and I was grasping around, trying to find the openings.
I had just completed treatment for breast cancer. My father had passed away from cancer the year I was diagnosed. I marked my twentieth anniversary in business for myself by closing my public relations agency, letting my staff go, and refocusing my career as a writer and consultant. I harbored anger over my “lost year” undergoing treatment for cancer, struggling to keep afloat financially, and mourning the one person whom I counted on all my life to have my back when the chips were down: my father. I knew I did not want to go back to my old life as an overworked public relations executive. I knew that my life moving forward needed to be more balanced, less stressful, and overall healthier. I wanted to reclaim my life and live it on better terms.
I speak with women and men around the country, and they have shared their stories about feeling stuck between two worlds. Many are cancer survivors, but not all. Many have faced other challenges and changes and find themselves in transition, whether by choice or otherwise. Most have reached a point in life where they are taking stock and seeking balance and purpose. Some have been successful. Others are still finding their way.
Becoming unstuck does not happen overnight. Life is a work in progress. Like a work of art, your life needs care and maintenance. And sometimes you need to change the frame or setting to give it new perspective.
I sculpted my own mental and physical makeover like an artist. I took stock of my own life and my personal tools—my skills, talents, and strengths—and thought about ways I could repurpose them. I overhauled my mental and physical self with a healthier diet, daily exercise, meditation, and stress management. I made a list of everything I felt was good in my life and everything that I felt needed to be eliminated or changed to make things better. And when I looked at the two columns side by side, I realized I had a lot to offer. But I needed to rechannel my energy, release any negativity holding me back, and rethink my goals if I wanted to make a change. You can’t retrace your steps in life, but you can choose the direction you want take moving forward.
More important, I realized I needed to kick my tires, change my mental oil, and recharge my batteries for a smoother ride down the road of the rest of my life. I may have hit a few bumps and had some parts replaced, but my engine was still running fine.
We all have the capacity to stay fearless and fabulous at every age and stage of our lives.
Don’t let anyone make you think or feel otherwise. And if life hands you a few bad cards, it doesn’t mean you have to fold. You need to reshuffle the deck and deal again.
Always remember: Aim to live life on your terms with passion and purpose. And always try to enjoy the ride.
Stay Fearless & Fabulous!
