Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

London: Printed for and sold by the Author, 1772. Scarce Posthumous 1772 Sole Edition on Divorce and State Morality - Written by the Colonial Rector of Newport, Rhode Island, from the Library of Herman Wm. Kapp Pollen, Thomas (c. 1703-1768). The Fatal Consequences of Adultery, To Monarchies as well as to Private Families: with A Defence [sic] of the Bill, passed in the House of Lords in the Year 1771, Intituled [sic] "An Act to retrain Persons who shall be divorced for the Crime of Adultery, from marrying, or contracting Matrimony, with the Party," &c. And an Historical Account of Marriage, &c. London: Printed for and sold by the Author, [i.e., the Author's Estate]; No. 42, on Dowgate Hill; and by T. Lowndes, No. 77, in Fleet-Street, 1772. First and only edition. 12mo. 6-1/2" x ; 4-1/8" 198 x 121 mm. xi, [1], 287, [1] pp. with a half-title. Contemporary tan calf, rebacked with a gilt-lettered spine with blind riles. New endpapers. Minimal toning to text block, minor intermittent foxing, corners gently bumped. With a handsome custom red morocco bookplate gilt-stamped "From The Books of Herman Wm. Kapp" affixed to the front pastedown. A clean, tight, and very good copy. $2,000. * A scarce, highly polemical work published during a period of intense public anxiety over high-profile aristocratic divorce cases (such as the notorious Grosvenor case of 1770). Writing in defense of the failed Marital Restraints Bill of 1771, which sought to legally ban divorced, adulterous parties from marrying their lovers, Pollen argues that the strict subjugation of women to their husbands is vital to the role of government as a preserver of social mores. Pollen was an Oxford-educated cleric who served from 1754 to 1760 as the missionary rector of Trinity Church in Newport, Rhode Island, under the auspices of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG). A prominent colonial intellectual, he famously collaborated directly with Benjamin Franklin on a plan to establish a local school for free and enslaved Black children. This 1772 printing represents the definitive, sole edition of the text; no subsequent reprints were ever published. General trade distribution was handled by John Oliver (c. 1702-1775), official printer to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK). This copy boasts a distinguished provenance, having once belonged to the library of Herma.…
