From the Author:
Hello from Carolyn Rosenblatt! I am glad you have interest in my book and this subject of aging parents in general. I'm a Baby Boomer with a 92 year old mother in law and a lot of what I write about in this book comes from personal, as well as professional experiences. If you're a Boomer like me, the person looking back at you in the mirror has some sign of aging herself. We have a responsibility to our aging parents and grandparents and we never learned how to do the job of caring for them in school. We want to take care of ourselves, and we want to do right by the elders in our lives at the same time. Not always so easy, right?
Writing this book was for me like sitting down with the many clients I've served over the last 45 years, either as a home care nurse, or as a lawyer, helping them understand what was going on. I hope it feels like that for you, as if we're having a long conversation about what to do, and I'm helping you learn the legal ropes, the financial stuff and giving you guidance about the healthcare system too. I have a lot of stories about real situations now, more than ever and I've shared them in the book so others can learn from what works and what doesn't work with aging parents in different families.
My first book was written 6 years before this one. I thought it was full of good information. That was, until my son, Brendan, said, "Mom, you've gotta stop writing like a lawyer" and he was right! Lawyers are eager to give information, just as I was. But our legal training didn't teach us how to just be informal and tell about cases to help others learn. So this second book is a lot less formal, and it's full of stories about real client's problems (names changed, of course!) so you can see what they did right or not. To me, it feels like a much better book. I changed a lot of things too. I added a chapter on how to protect your aging parents from financial abuse, as subject I'm very passionate about. And I have learned from countless experiences with the adult children of aging parents over the last 6 years and I've shaped this for you in my writing. I sincerely hope it will help you feel more confident and better prepared when you have the responsibility to help your loved ones. I can assure you, I write from the heart and want you to feel my support and help.
