A lovely copy of Aesop's fables, complete with woodcuts done after Bewick, in a smart modern binding by Eric Sweet. Smartly bound in a smart modern quarter calf binding with paper to the boards, with renewed endpapers, in a custom cloth chemise and cloth slipcase, bound by Eric Sweet in 1992, with his label to the front paste down. Chemise and slipcase are in a fine condition.Illustrated with a woodcut to each fable, done in reproduction of Bewick, in addition to a frontispiece, which is by Charlton Nesbit, who was an apprentice of Bewick. It is likely that Nesbit produced the woodcuts in this work in imitation of his teacher. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking, reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style.
