“Like my first two FLYING FANTASIES books, this book also contains hundreds of flying machines that were only dreamed of or conceived on paper only…maybe? I could find no record to confirm that any of them were ever actually built. Many were built in “model” form (one of my favorite forms) only, but almost all examples were designed, patented, flying creations that never left the drawing board, let alone, the ground. I didn’t include most of the machinery-only-type flying machines, because I thought they should at least have room for a pilot, although I did keep a few of the more interesting ones. Researching these books was fun and fascinating, albeit, a lot of work. I hope you will be entertained and fascinated as much as I was while searching for these ancient, forgotten, flying “Dream Machines.” “Many of the specifications describe inventions which are no doubt impracticable; some are even ridiculously absurd and are probably the result of dreams.”--Griffith Brewer & Patrick Y. Alexander, Aeronautical Specifications Filed at the Patent Office, 1815-1891 PS: As with the first two books, I also had a little fun playing with the words and titles of these wild and wacky flying creations (although some of them do look plausible). Somewhere along the line these books started turning into small joke books. Maybe I should have called them, “Fun with Flying Fantasies.” --Terrence I. Murphy PS, PS: There will also be numerous cartoons and aeronautical ads from the time period. ALSO: And once again, as in the first two books, play the flying machine patent game.
