Book by Lichter, Uri

From Library Journal:

Lichter, a Miami architect, speaks for a group not often heard from: the ultra-orthodox Polish Jews. He grew up in Lvov, son of an old Hasidic family, in the traditional belief that whatever happens is the will of God. He lost his mother and older sister in the Holocaust, but by posing as gentiles and falsifying their documents, and with the help of kind Polish Christians, he, his sister, his father, and his brothers survived. To their credit it must be said that they remained religious even as they became prosperous in their new homeland, America. An important addition to Holocaust testimonies because it affords a glimpse of the rich Hasidic life in prewar Poland that has been so completely destroyed. In contrast to Lichter, Ornstein grew up in an assimilated Polish-Jewish family. He tells first of their lives in Poland, the poignancy of the family's life in the ghetto, and then, like a modern Dante, of the agony, anguish, and misery of the five camps which he survived, and of the death march and subsequent liberation. Like Lichter, Ornstein became a successful U.S. citizen. His book is well written and belongs in many libraries. Gerda Haas, Holocaust Human Rights Ctr. of Maine, Augusta
