Rezensionen:
Semler provides a comprehensive, user-friendly guide that should prove an excellent resource for the growing number of women who are taking increasingly active roles in exploring their health care options in a male-dominated industry. A writer and medical news producer for CBS This Morning, Semler has gathered her information and advice from 300 experts on women's health issues. Underlying her counsel is the philosophy that living well and healthily is not harder "and can actually be more fun than ignoring your health and settling for less than your personal potential for good health." Semler details the biases in women's health care and the inner and outer workings of the female body, then proceeds with in-depth discussions of the facts, myths, and alternatives that obtain in six key areas: menstrual health; sexual health; childbirth; energy and mood; fitness; and cancer and heart disease. Menopause, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, infertility, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, and heart health are among the subtopics well covered in particular chapters. Semler, a writer and producer of health and general news for CBS This Morning since 1987, here offers a basic introduction to women's health for lay readers. She covers anatomy and physiology, sexuality, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and women's diseases as well as general topics such as nutrition, exercise, weight control, skin care, and mental health. The advice on choosing and working with healthcare providers and the appendix listing recommended screening tests for various age groups are excellent. While this book lacks the depth of the Boston Women's Health Book Collective's The New Our Bodies, Ourselves: A Book by and for Women (LJ 2/1/93)?there are few illustrations or referrals and no bibliographies?the information that it does offer is current, accurate, and supportive. A good addition to circulating consumer health collections in need of women's health material.?Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.

Make room on the book shelf for this informative and empowering guide to women's health. Semler, a CBS news producer and writer, consulted over 300 experts in women's health from across the country in compiling this clear, direct compendium. Initial chapters offer a clear description of the healthy female body and how it works. Subsequent chapters consider a wide range of health problems, detailing various treatment options and what to expect from them. Specific information is offered in such areas as infertility, cancer treatments, fitness and mental health. Included are explicit instructions on giving the Mammacare method of breast self-examination and advice on calcium requirements at various ages. Throughout, Semler reiterates her theme that every woman is her own best expert on her body and its physical quirks, stressing the need for women to be activists in promoting their health and to seek a cooperative, collaborative regimen of health care. Straightforward illustrations supplement Semler's accessible, commonsense approach to helping women get and stay well.
