Paxton (Columbia U.) updated this fourth edition of his undergraduate-level survey textbook to trace the causes of the most significant events in Europe in the twentieth century, including changes in social, economic and political systems as well as the effects of war, revolution, and violent extremism. In twenty-three chapters Paxton analyzes the rise and fall of fascism and communism, the complex diplomacy of the Cold War, and the growing authority of mass culture and consumerism in both the East and the West, which he asserts resulted in the breakup of the Eastern Bloc.
