Although American Indians have seasonally occupied the Estes Park valley for over 10,000 years, Joel Estes and his family were the first permanet settlers. Estes arrived in 1859, the same year gold ore was discovered in what would become the state of Colorado. As other settlers arrived, a village formed at the confluence of the Big Thompson and Fall Rivers. Estes Park Beginnings illustrates the very earliest views of the area leading to the formation of the Town of Estes Park.
