As a University Travelling Scholar, he went first to Balliol College and then to a research studentship at Nuffield College, Oxford. For his thesis, written under the supervision of Professor Hugh Trevor-Roper and submitted only a week or so before he died, he was posthumously awarded a D.Phil. The thesis was published as The English Face of Machiavelli ( London, 1964 ) and he was about to return to a lectureship in the School of History in this University at the time of his death. - The University of Melbourne.
