Inhaltsangabe: This 800-page premier book on energy focuses on energy sources, utilizations, legislations and sustainability as it relates to a state, a province, or a country, or a community within a state. This book presents various kinds of energy sources, ways to convert energy for end use, better use of energy towards conservation and energy- and environmental-sustainability. As a very proper model-state the authors chose the State of Illinois which has the largest overall fossil energy reserves, including the largest strippable bituminous coal reserves; the largest user of nuclear energy in USA and has also been investing in all kinds of renewable energies including wind energy, solar energy, biofuels, geothermal energy, and various energy storage options. In the authors' opinion, State of Illinois is a pioneer in legislations for proper development and use of all kinds of energy. Their motivation to do this project was to educate the public (including students, energy engineers and planers, as well as state- and country-wide policy makers) about all aspects of energy.

In this book, the authors present various energy sources, conversions technologies, and conservation possibilities. In every case, the authors have presented various options available for a country, for a state, or for a community to achieve its goal of energy sufficiency, clean environment and as a result, sustainability. Variety of schemes related to each energy source and its related conversion technologies are presented and sustainability of renewable energy sources is discussed. All the possible energy sources including coal, natural gas, petroleum, nuclear, solar, wind, biofuels and geothermal energy are presented in this book, as well as energy storage options. The authors have also presented various ways of dealing with carbon dioxide, which is produced from fossil fuels combustion, including its collection, transportation, storage and sequestration. The energy storage systems presented in this book will facilitate reliable and full integration of renewable power to the grid.

About the Author: Dr. Mansoori is a professor of chemical & bio engineering and Physics at UIC. He holds BSc, MSc and PhD degrees plus postdoctoral training and he has been teaching university level courses on energy and related topics which include Energy: Sources, Conversion, Conservation, Energy Conversions, Environmental Pollution Control, Fossil Fuels, Plant Design, Principles of Nanotechnology & Nanobiotechnology, Statistical Mechanics, Transport Phenomena, and various Thermodynamics subjects. Dr. Mansoori has given numerous short courses on energy and nanotechnology at sites of many companies, professional societies, government laboratories and research centers around the world.

Professor Mansoori has been active in research in the areas of renewable, non-renewable and storage of energies, thermodynamics, nanotechnology, statistical mechanics, and molecular based study of flow assurance in fossil fuel industries. He has over 550 publications which include ten books. He has been a consultant to numerous energy-related companies and organizations. Dr. Mansoori is founder of International Non-Renewable Energy Source Congress (INRESC) series, co-founder of Fluids and Thermal Energy Conversion (FTEC) Conferences, founder of Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Symposium series, organizer of over 185 colloquia, workshops and short courses for professional societies, industry and academic institutions on energy and related topics. He has given over 160 invited seminars at universities and research centers on energy and related topics. Dr. Mansoori served as editor-in-chief of Energy Sources Journal for six year, as co-editor of Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering for eight years, as honorary editor-in-chief of International Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology since ten years ago, as series editor of books related to energy and as a member of editorial boards of numerous energy and nanotechnology related subjects the list of which are too many to include here.

Dr. Enayati, is a consultant with chemical & energy industries. He holds degrees of BSc, MSc, and PhD in chemical engineering and worked in energy area and specifically in development of first and second generation biofuels through thermochemical and biochemical pathways. Prior to his work as a consultant, he was in charge of biofuels development programs at American Science and Technology, collaborating with University of Wisconsin and South Dakota State University. He was one of the organizers of alternative energy technology symposiums at the Chicago State University and University of Wisconsin. He has over nine years of experience in process research and development in chemical/biochemical engineering. Nader also served as an editorial assistant of Energy Sources Journal for four years.

L. Barnie Agyarko, is an energy consultant and an instructor at Kennedy-King College in Chicago, Illinois. He holds BSc and MSc degrees, both, in chemical engineering. He has been involved in research work on energy related projects. For four years, he worked at Gas Technology Institute on natural gas processing technologies. Prior to his MSc degree, he interned at the Argonne National Laboratory for a year developing novel materials for high energy density batteries. He has publications on both fuels processing and renewable energy utilization.
