Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Small hardcover. Original binding, with leather spine and brown patterned paper over boards. About half the leather on the spine has chipped away. Large oval label on the front board, with title printed in gold on a black background. Boards edgeworn, but binding tight. On the inside front cover, in the form of a bookplate, is an advertisement for 'Emblems of Mortality. by Holbein' printed in New Haven in 1864. On the inside of the back cover, another descriptive cutout. And on the back cover, another paper oval pasted down, with faded description of Holbein's series. Title page dated 1846. Copyright page dated 1845. Preface dated Dec 1845. 102 pages. Full page, engraved frontispiece. 46 plates showing Death, in the form of a skeleton, coming to fetch people of every sort. Each illustration measures 2 x 2.5 inches. They are printed on every even-numbered page. Accompanying text includes a few lines of verse and a page describing the iconography of the image. They are slightly-simplified versions of Holbein's originals, engraved by Dr. Anderson in 1810 & then stored and rediscovered at the publisher's office for this edition. Measures 4 x 6.25. A faint vertical tide-line at the outer margin, but otherwise pages are clean. The Babcock/South Carolina imprint on the title page is unusual. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that its an ABE stock photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.…
