Later three-quarter calf and cloth. Tall octavo. xviii, (2), 184pp. Fourth edition. Illustrated with 9 folding engraved plates. An early work on physical exercise by Peter Heinrich Clias, a student of the German gymnast, Johann Christoph Friedrich GustMuths. Captain Clias was superintendent of gymnastics at the Royal Military College and was hired in 1822 to organize physical regimen courses for the British Army and Royal Navy. The first edition of this work came out in 1823. The 9 folding plates show figures engaged in various exercises. The last plate deals with swimming. A good copy with some foxing and spotting to some of the page and plate margins. The plates are all very good with no chips or tears. The binding is worn but firm with some soiling to the cloth and some rubbing to the leather spine which has been rebacked with a new label. Scarce.
