In 1867 64 per cent of the population were white; in 1877, 64 per cent, and in 1887, 69 per cent. The males were 56, 57, and 55 per cent for the same years. In 1887 2 per cent of the Whites and per cent of the blacks could read only, and per cent of the whites and per cent of the blacks could both read and write.
