This volume, published in two parts, illustrates front-line research in biotechnology, paying special attention to recent developments. New emerging areas of biotechnological research and applications are presented, as well as various aspects of two important and interwoven problems: the raising of the competitive edge of industrial production; and the protection of the environment and improvement of the quality of life. Part I contains the general lectures and the sessions in basic biotechnology (molecular cellular biology; enabling technologies), while Part II includes the sessions in applied biotechnology ( health-care biotechnology; industrial, environmental, and agricultural biotechnology). Part II also contains special symposia, with sessions on education and training in biotechnology; biosafety research in the EEC; and science parks for biotechnological development.
