Inhaltsangabe:

This book tells how the Hashemite kings came to role the desert tract of the East Bank after World War I, how Palestinians became the majority in today's population, and a rapidly changing society's difficult history since 1948. It shows Jordan's position as crossroads, buffer state and middle way in the turbulence in the Middle East; it assesses the tensions in Jordan's society, the pressures on its political system, the army's role, and the problems and prospects for its economy. Most important, the author offers a dispassionate view of the Palestine question and the West Banks future, and weighs the options both for Jordan and for United States policy on that intractable issue. Throughout its pages, he elegantly and clearly demonstrates the U.S. stake in Jordan's continued well-being and prudent policies.

From Library Journal:

To many Middle East watchers, Jordan (and King Hussein) is a would-be linchpin in a resolution of Arab-Israeli tensions; to others Jordan is merely "a Palestinian state with a lame duck king, left over from another era." In a dispassionate and reasoned analysis (born of 28 years of U.S. State Department and Foreign Service experience), Day provides logical and clearly understandable answers that point to the probable shape of any viable solution in the area. Jordan's history, geography, and demography place it at the center of this volatile international cauldron, and the United States stands in a particularly advantageous position vis-a-vis a cooperative peace venture. Highly recommended for all subject collections.David P. Snider, Casa Grande P.L., Ariz.
