Earn It: Life, Times, and Leadership is a military memoir and leadership manual co-authored by Sergeant Major of the Army Julius William (Bill) Gates and Colonel Wes Martin. The book chronicles Gates’ life from his rural upbringing in North Carolina through a distinguished Army career that spanned over five decades. It highlights his formative years on a self-sufficient family farm, which instilled the values of discipline, hard work, and service. These principles shaped his early military experiences and leadership philosophy.

Gates recounts key moments in Cold War Berlin, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm, offering firsthand insight into major military and geopolitical events. The narrative emphasizes the importance of mentorship, soldier development, moral courage, and adapting to changing operational environments. His story illustrates how enlisted leaders influence Army culture and mission success.

The title “Earn It” reflects Gates’ lifelong belief that leadership and success are not given but must be continually proven through service, integrity, and responsibility. The book is part autobiography, part leadership study, and serves as a professional development guide for military personnel at all levels.
