Inhaltsangabe: Part of the "Critical Assessments of Writers in English" series, the aim of which is to provide complete collections of previously published, formative critical assessments covering the whole work of individual writers. The titles should be useful to serious readers of literature, researchers and advanced students. Many of the pieces included were originally published in journals or books which are now out of print or very difficult to obtain. Each set has an authoritative introductory survey, as well as a full bibliography and biographical details. This collection attempts to present as wide a view as possible of the E.M. Forster's work, taking into account biographical, aesthetic and other concerns and, ultimately, allowing the reader to return to the original texts.

Inhaltsangabe: This volume of interviews and recollections offers a kaleidoscopic view of E.M. Forster's character as observed and remembered by college associates, close friends, chance acquaintances and fellow writers. These forty-six pieces, some published here for the first time, variously reveal facets of his private and public personalities: Forster the subtle analyst of middle-class England, the spokesman for liberal causes and humane values, the Cambridge insider and the committed friend.

Buchbeschreibung Helm Information, Robertsbridge, first edition, 1998, 1998. 4 vols, rexine, 8vo, in publisher's card box, 24 cm, xix, 350 + vii, 351 + viii, 445 + vii. 441 pp. An attractively produced set bringing together much of the most important critical material on Forster. Vol. 1 : Memories and Impressions; Reviews: Where Angels Fear to Tread to The Life to Come and Other Stories; Vol. 2 : The Critical Response: Early Responses 1907-44; The Short Fiction; Forster's Criticism; Miscellaneous Writings; Vol. 3 : The Modern Critical Response: Where Angels Fear to Tread to Maurice; Vol. 4 : Relations and Aspects; The Modern Critical Response, 1945-90. From the publisher's description: "Volume I contains the usual critical apparatus; introduction, chronology of Forster's life; bibliography of his works; critical bibliographies; chronological list of criticism included, and then continues with a selection of personal recollections and obituaries. It offers contemporary reviews of Forster's fiction, biographies and essay collections from Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905) to The Life to Come and Other Stories (1972). Volume II concentrates first on general assessments of Forster's work as a whole and then offers criticism of the early short stories, the posthumously published short fiction and miscellaneous writings. Volume III presents responses to each of Forster's six novels, presented in chronological order, allowing the reader to follow the evolution of the assessments of a given novel over time as well as the changes in critical trends. Volume IV ranges widely from assessments of Forster as a critic himself to discussions of his fiction, aesthetics and thought in a relation to other writers; reactions to the film versions; and then a sections of essays from 1945 concentrating on the larger philosophical, ideological, social and literary issues raised by Forster's achievement as a whole rather than of individual writings." From a review of the series : "The Helm Information Critical Assessments of Writers in English, under the general editorship of Graham Clarke, is an invaluable aid to scholarship.this series generously makes available truly representative samples of contemporaneous reviews of a writer's major works, as well as a wide range of general assessments and critical views up to the present moment. Today's scholars can discover in these finely edited, exquisitely handsome volumes, not only the histories of critical debates for their chosen writers, but they can also recognize the recurrent features of the writers' oeuvres that have characteristically defined the object of study."
