A charmingly illustrated collection of Isaac Watts' Divine Songs for Children, published here as part of the Sunday School Reward Books series. Bound in quarter calf with the original boards, rebacked.Published as part of the Sunday School Reward Books series, by Henry Mozley. Dated c1840 from the date range of other books in this series.Illustrated with thirty-seven engravings, a frontispiece and a vignette to the title page.A collection of Isaac Watts's didactic, moral poetry for children, originally published in 1715, with more than one thousand editions. Written by Isaac Watts, an English Congregational minister, hymn writer, theologian, and logician. Although Watts's hymns are now better known than this collection of poetry, 'Divine Songs' remained a standard textbook in schools and a popular children's book for nearly 200 years. Notably, the work includes "Against Idleness and Mischief" (No. 20), the song famously parodied by Lewis Carroll as "How Doth the Little Crocodile", in 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Bound in quarter calf with the original boards, rebacked. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the extremities and joints. Light age toning to boards, with an ink inscription to the front. Cords visible to the front of the work before front free endpaper, although board remains firmly held. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Good.
