The path of enlightenment is a journey of the spirit. It is one of discovering our true self, the authentic being that abides at the very center of one's consciousness and attempts to answer eternal questions: Who am I? Do I have a purpose for being here? If so, what is my function?
This is my story, and I refer to it as Diary of a Holy Fool. In the ensuing pages, I invite everyone to travel with me to explore my inner landscape. It is a journey of wonderment and surprises that consists of peaks and valleys—and some plateaus when nothing seems to be happening, at least to my conscious mind.
I will begin in the valley, at a time when outward success as a fashion designer was a distracting camouflage for the discontent rumbling and bubbling beneath the surface of my everyday awareness. Like a volcano, it erupted into full-blown crisis that I came to realize as a crisis of my spirit.
The Opening
It was my custom to go out on Friday nights to enjoy a few drinks with friends at Under the Stairs, one of my favorite bars on the West Side of Manhattan. The pleasant hum of conversations floated nicely through the room, adding a friendly atmosphere to the neighborhood pub. It helped diffuse the tension accumulated from a working week in the garment industry as a designer of women's sportswear. But this evening, I could not dispel a sense of sadness hanging over me like a dark sky preceding a storm. I struggled all evening to conceal my heaviness of heart, but to no avail. I carried the weighty gloom home to my apartment.
Returning to my East Side apartment in the early morning hours, I put a record of Barbra Streisand on the stereo, poured a scotch and water, and dropped into the arms of my living room couch. Barbra's haunting voice pierced the silent night air and spiraled me into an ever deeper, fathomless pit of gloom. In a panic, I jumped from the couch and, with glass in hand, stumbled through the apartment while looking for something to raise my drowning spirit. Perhaps a book, a photograph, or something of an uplifting nature would help. I felt the well-decorated rooms that ordinarily filled me with a sense of beauty now seemed unimportant.
In a momentary flash of awareness, a mirror reflected to me a life devoid of meaning and as barren as a desert. I saw that...
