The emerging frontier: neuroplasticity and neurogenesis

The scientific community has determined that we learn and retain fresh information by creating new synaptic connections between neurons. Visiting the mental site of a particular line of thought strengthens the firing capacity of the neurons in that section of the brain that is being activated and reactivated with that same thought sequence. As the mental magnetic charge grows stronger, new neurons are created to increase the number in their `crew ship'. With continual rehearsal of the information, these new neurons form the cluster that enables them to be wired together. New synaptic connections are created, linking neural influence for a greater triggering and firing effect. Simply stated, consistent neural stimulation results in the development of new neural networks.

Research continues to reveal the brain's formidable ability to adapt and adjust itself to new experiences and new data we feed our minds with. It is capable of rewiring itself, repairing damaged neural circuits and pathways. It is capable of upgrading prevailing circuits and even developing new neural nets to form a new network system. We have the capacity to reorganize the brain's circuitry. We can cause the brain to forge an alternative circuitry by training it to abandon its habitual internal wiring and begin firing new networks and patterning. This ability reveals the plasticity of the brain. Our ability to change our existing circuits grants us the opportunity to experience transformation, not only in our brain mechanics but also in our tangible experiences. Our thoughts create our world.

By changing our internal wirings into a preferred state, we utilize our brain's neuroplastic nature. We can even teach old dogs new tricks by learning to change and evolve our brain circuits, irrespective of our age. We can learn to bypass those circuits of inherited genetics, those sabotaging experiences, and those repetitive, unhealthy, habitual patterns that keep producing the undesired drama in our lives. To rewire our brain is to break out of the routine cells of tripping thought patterns that hold us hostage to unpreferred, cyclic states of being and living.

Contrary to the school of thought that told us that our brains are fundamentally hardwired with unalterable circuitry, we are being daily presented with scientifically based proof of a non-rigid brain system with its incredible ability for flexibility and adaptability. Neuroplasticity addresses this aspect of our brain mechanism. This offers us the option to reformat, repattern, and reinvent our neural circuits and connections to create preferred mind-states, admirable behavior patterns and desired preferences. This power option puts mankind behind the steering wheel where he can alter the configuration of his brain, change his conduct, revamp his personality, envision a desired reality and ultimately translate that reality into its tangible equivalent. Our brain's neuroplastic nature goes contrary to the myth of the hardwired brain with its circuits of rigidity. The scientific world has proved over and over again that the brain is `plastic' in certain areas of its structure. The brain reorganizes itself and changes in response to new learning, new experiences, or the entertainment of new thoughts. This process of the brain's adaptability and flexibility is called neuroplasticity.
