Radio astronomical heterodyne receivers based on waveguide mixers in combination wit h superconducting mixíng devices offer state‐of‐the‐art sensitivity for high resolution spectroscopy up to a frequency of 2 THz. This work describes the design, optimization and analysis of waveguide mixer RF environments, pushing their application above frequencies of 1 THz. These include all crucial components, i.e. the feed horn, the waveguide, branch‐line hybrids, the device‘s probe and RF choke structures. The developed designs are verified by measurements and, e.g. are used in the flight hardware of the HIFI Band 2 mixers of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far‐Infrared (HIFI) on the Herschel Space Observatory.
