Beschreibung:

Cloth, 4to, 26 cm, 120 pp, colour ills. From the blurb: "Decorative Paper shows just how accessible paper crafts can be, requiring a minimum of experience and equipment. With step-by-step instructions, lists of materials and equipment needed, and detailed diagrams, it shows how to create handmade papers, beautifully decorated sheets, and projects to showcase your papers. Part one, "Papermaking," begins with a brief history of paper- making and then presents all of the techniques needed for forming papers. Once these techniques are mastered, Decorative Paper presents many different ways to create more advanced handmade papers, such as adding texture to the sheets; embedding such materials as leaves, thread, or feathers; dyeing the paper pulp; and even laminating sheets together. Part two, "Paper Decorating," offers complete instructions for a wide variety of decorating techniques. Stenciling, paper cutting, embossing, batik, and direct printing are fully explained. Also included are chapters on orizomegami, the Japanese art of folding and dyeing paper; suminagashi, a simple method of marbling using ink and water; and oil-color marbling, which yield striking papers with little effort. Pan three, "Paper Projects," which begins with a chapter on how to work with paper and mat board, includes a wide variety of projects for the home, office, and celebrations, including wallpaper, single-signature books, desk blotters, cards, and gift boxes." Buchbeschreibung Jacobus Ermerins, Eenige Zeeuwsche oudheden, 3 (1792), pp. 219-220; not in Arents; Cat. Provinciale Bibliotheek van Zeeland; KVK & WorldCat; Cat. Goldsmith; NCC; STCN. Only copy located of the first and only edition of Veere ordinances concerning the Goedeluiden Guild or St. Jans Guild, two names for the same guild, whose members worked as porters, carrying peat, wood, sacks of various kinds of goods, etc., especially but not exclusively as dock workers loading and unloading ships. Besides its obvious importance for the local history of Veere and its extensive overseas shipping trade, the book gives remarkably detailed information about labour organisation, wages and workers' rights that may reflect general practice in other parts of the Dutch Republic. From 1441 to 1799, Veere had a special staple contract with Scotland, granting the city a monopoly on all Scottish goods. The second work therefore adds documents explicitly concerning Scottish shipping and goods coming in from or via Scotland. We have located only one other edition of any of these ordinances, a 1687 edition of the ordinance of that year (pp. 45-49 in the present edition), also known only from a single copy. Ermerins, writing in 1792, refers to many of the documents transcribed here and adds, "alle door de zorg en oplettenheid van wylen den heer Mr. Johannis Marinissen, in der tyd overdeken van dezen gilde, door den druk gemeen gemaakt" (all published in print through the care and attention of the late Master Johannis Marinissen, then director [literally chief deacon] of this guild). In very good condition and with generous margins, with only the title-page slightly spotted and slightly dirty. The wrappers are tattered, primarily on and near the spine. Artikel-Nr. B2NG3HDVSSAG

Buchbeschreibung For Affaitati: Kellenbenz, "Die Konkurrenten der Fugger als bankiers der Spanischen Krone", in: Zeitsch. Unternehmensgeschichte XXIV (1979), pp. 81-98. An Antwerp notarial declaration made voluntarily by Giovan Carlo Affaitati, also known as Johannes Carolus de Affaytadi (Cremona 1500 or 1510-Lier 1555 or Ghistelle 1587) soon after he moved to Antwerp, on behalf of Guido de Crema, citizen of Mantua, and Raphael Brumani, citizen of Cremona. It was drawn up before the Antwerp notary Anthony Amala and three named witnesses and appears to concern De Crema and Brumani's inheritance. Affaitati testified to the content of a document drawn up on 31 December 1545 before the Mantua notary Hieronimus de Zizolis. Affitati came from a merchant banking family in Cremona. He set up in Lisbon but moved to Antwerp in 1545, when the Holy Roman Emperor Karl V made him Baron of Ghistelle. He was active in the spice trade and is said to have been the most important financier of the wars of the Holy Roman Emperor Karl V and King Philip II of Spain.Formerly folded to a smaller size, leaving traces of the old folds, but still in very good condition. A primary document recording Karl V's financier in Antwerp, only months after he moved there. Artikel-Nr. I72CIIY3ZLY5

Buchbeschreibung Decree signed by William of Orange, Stadholder of The Netherlands and future King William III of England, tranferring to Johan Diederik (or Theodo(o)r), 2nd Baron of Friesheim, recently appointed chief bailiff and state prosecutor in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, all sources of income that had been previously bestowed on his predecessor, Johan Ruse, in total 330 guilders per year plus further unspecified emoluments. The document notes that Friesheim had been appointed to succeed Ruse on 5 October 1679. It is signed by William of Orange ("Guillaume de Orange") and Johan Pesters, a leading figure in William's entourage. Johan Ruse may have been the former Burgomaster of Maasstricht of that name, also known as Johannes Rusius, who was still living in 1668.In his teens or early twenties Johan Diederik had served as William of Orange's page and became a captain in the Dutch army in 1666. He was to serve many years under William of Orange, rising to the rank of Major General in 1701 and General in 1718. He gradually shifted into civilian life beginning in 1709 and ended his career as Governor of 's-Hertogenbosch, where he died in 1733. The earlier civilian post documented in the present decree is not recorded in the standard biographies, which note that little is known about Friesheim, in spite of his distinguished career and decorations for his military achievements under King William III.The document and complete paper and wax seal in very good condition, formerly folded and with some small holes in the blank second leaf where folds cross. MANUSCRIPT - MEDICAL - VETERINARY & HUMAN]. Wolfgang S.

Buchbeschreibung A remarkable Austrian manuscript in German, richly and elaborately decorated in numerous colours, devoted primarily to veterinary medicine and pharmacology for the treatment of horses, but also discussing the treatment of other livestock and with the second (shorter) work devoted to the treatment of humans. It gives instructions for preparing and using many medicines, the main work covering about 400 ailments and the work for human medicine about 50. The slightly primitive landscape on the title-page of part 2 shows a horse standing in the foreground with what appears to be blood streaming from 12 points on his body. Several headings toward the end of part 2 announce sections on ailments caused, cured or warded off by magic, including "Zauberische Kranckheiten der Roß" (p. 110) and "Ein bewertes Styck [= Stück] vor Zauwerey fur Menschen und Viech dieses bey Sich zu Tragen, und den Vuch im Stall Angenagelt" (p. 117). The latter includes two drawings of the signs that are to be carried around or nailed up[?] in the stall. They look rather like alchemical signs. With one or a few small and unobtrusive worm holes near the foot of the page through most of the manuscript, some stains and restorations in the gutter margin of the first few leaves and an occasional minor stain or smudge on other leaves, but still in good condition. The binding is worn and shows some restorations. A fascinating and elaborately decorated manuscript devoted primarily to the treatment of medicine ailments in horses, mixing folk remedies with magic. TORINUS (THORER), Albanus (ed).].

Buchbeschreibung Adams S1461; Durling 4351; Parkinson 2410. First edition of a collection of four medical works, compiled by the Swiss physician Albanus Torinus (1489-1550). The main part of the work consists of De re medica, also known as Medicina Pliniana, a very popular medical text during the middle ages. Compiled in the fourth century by an anonymous author, it is generally ascribed to Plinius Valerianus, also called pseudo-Plinius, since it mainly derived from Pliny the Elder's Historia naturalis. Consisting of five books, it gives various medicines and treatments for different diseases, ailments, wounds, tumours etc. Besides Pliny the Elder, the work is heavily based on the works of Galen and Dioscorides, all highly esteemed in the Arabic world. The work also contains three other medical works from different authors. "The contents are all either spurious works or later compilations from genuine works of the authors to whom they are attributed" (Durling). It starts with an introduction to "the art of healing", ascribed to Soranus of Ephesus. The second text is by Oribasius, a Greek medical writer from the fourth century BC. According to Durling, the text is an extract from the first chapter of his Euporista ad Eunapium. The work closes with a botanical text, De virtutibus herbarum, ascribed to Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis, but written by an anonymous author from the fourth century, known as Pseudo-Apuleius. In one of the manuscripts Torinus used, the text was ascribed to the famous Italian physician Antonio Musa Brassavola (1500-1555), an expert on the works of Galen and heavily influenced by his work. The editor of the work, Torinus, was appointed professor of practical medicine at the University of Basel after receiving the degree of doctor in medicine in Montpellier. He translated many Greek texts into Latin, or Latin works into the vernacular, including Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica. From the library of the Russian tsars, with its letterpress library label with shelf number on pastedown and the coat of arms on the spine. With the place and date of printing added in manuscript on the title-page. Paper on boards slightly chafed, binding with traces of use along the extremities, corners bumped and spine restored. First five leaves with a minor water stain, but otherwise a very good copy. Artikel-Nr. I3IBUUQYI836
