Beschreibung:

Barring the political agenda, the vital forces associated with India's nationalist movement were moral, literary and artistic. Many cultural protagonists were vocal in saying that the regeneration of our society could happen through the revival of our arts and culture, not by politics and economics alone. This impulse was quite visible in cultural thought-leaders like Ananda Coomaraswamy, Sri Aurobindo, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita, John Woodroffe, Syamaprasad Mookerjee, K.M. Munshi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Rabindranath Tagore made a strong case for developing a complete and moving orb of Indian culture. This book delves deep into the vision of these thought-leaders in making India a culturally strong nation, and warns us in different ways against becoming insularly modern. These personalities remind us of our unique past and time-tested virtues and values, and the criticality of sustaining them while being "modern" in many ways. They exult in our past and call upon us to be the torch-bearers of this legacy. This volume, while doing an in-depth study of these Indian cultural activists, laments on the lackadaisical attitude of the leaders of Independent India in maintaining and promoting our art forms and long-revered culture. A renewed effort in rejuvenating our culture is the need of the hour, especially when its moorings seem to be loosening and its symbols diluting. It is an irony to call for the recognition of Indian culture in India! Printed Pages: 168. Size: 15 x 23 Cm. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 100388

Buchbeschreibung Peter Lang Jan 2014, 2014. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - Curriculum and the Culture Wars offers a fresh perspective on perennial debates about the role of religion in public schools, focusing on the intersection of religion and curriculum. This debate has been renewed in part due to the growth of elective Bible courses in public schools in many parts of the country. The first half of the book presents new scholarship on the use of the Bible in schools, including a historical analysis of what the Founders had to say about the use of the Bible in public education, a more current assessment of the politics behind the elective Bible class movement in the early twenty-first century, and a critique of such educational programs from constitutional and pedagogical perspectives. This edited volume also offers new insights into long-standing battles that pit religious and secular advocates against one another in the areas of evolution and sex education and considers whether school choice programs that would allow parents the right to send their children to sectarian schools are an affront to promoting the goals of a liberal democracy. 222 pp. Englisch. Artikel-Nr. 9781433118487

Buchbeschreibung P.I.E. Mrz 2004, 2004. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - This book investigates alternative ways of working between cultural, artistic, and intellectual spaces in an era when the reality of globalisation imposes on our world view. Essays by leading performance scholars in Australia, Japan and USA are inspired by the Journey to Con-Fusion project; a collaboration between Tokyo's 'Gekidan Kaitaisha' and Melbourne's 'Not Yet It's Difficult' performance groups. Discussed in Alternatives are issues of cultural politics; intercultural exchange; representation and interpretation of contemporary performance; dramaturgical analysis; and readings of performative sites. This book also includes a photo essay of Journey to Con-Fusion. In addition, this multidisciplinary volume offers analyses of outstanding examples of rarely seen Japanese and Australian performance. This material will be of vital interest to scholars working at the intersections of theatre and cultural studies. This study results from the fruitful collaboration between artists and scholars through alternative networks and cross-cultural partnership. It addresses wide-ranging contexts for the arts, and debates possibilities for far-reaching alternatives in an age of advanced capitalism and globalisation. 168 pp. Englisch. Buchbeschreibung Peter Lang Jul 2002, 2002. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - Recent developments in cultural and literary discourse have upset traditional certainties and produced a plurality of positions that are often articulated in agonistic terms. Culture Agonistes both reflects this conflictual diversity and engages with the dialogic exchange taking place in cultural locations, discursive contexts and narrative histories. Born out of an International Conference on Culture and American Studies organized by the Hellenic Association for American Studies and the University of Athens (2000), this volume addresses a wide scope of controversial issues. It raises questions about the value of the aesthetic in current artistic and critical practices, the effects of globalization in relation to feminism and postcolonialism, and the imbrication of modernism with gender and consumer culture. Moreover, it highlights the challenges to canonical texts posed by revisionist mythmaking and translatability as well as the destabilizing condition of exilic consciousness. The mix of voices and approaches represented by the contributors indicate their engagement in discursive contestations that seek to transform sites of conflict into sites of revision and innovation. 230 pp. Englisch.
