Mais surtout un très grand livre, écrit dans la langue la plus forte, avec d'admirables dialogues et un portrait de femme si émouvant, étrange et déconcertant de candeur perverse que Marguerite Gautier est déjà la soeur des héroïnes d'Ibsen et de Dostoïevski. Les pièces et les ouvrages postérieurs de Dumas fils sont peut-être, comme disait Jules Renard, un peu trop bien "dumaficelés". Mais La Dame aux Camélias permet de comprendre pourquoi Maupassant et Tolstoï ont vu en lui un des plus grands romanciers de leur temps.
