Pale marginal spotting or soiling to colour plates, half-title and lithographic title lightly foxed, shallow section of loss along fore edge of sig. B6 and small closed tear to top edge of sig. K3 where roughly opened, the text never affected, slightly later discreet marginal annotations to pp. 132-4, tiny worm-track to gutter of sigs. K3-4 and intervening plate. A very good copy with bright plates. Additional lithographic title page, hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece with tissue-guard, 5 similar plates, colour sketch map, one double-page plate, hand-coloured, 7 wood-engravings to the text of which one full-page. First edition of Young's first book. "At first glance, this author's beautifully illustrated accounts of life and travel in India are like most others of the period: part guidebook and part adventure story [But] beneath the surface of her polished narratives lurk distinctly unfeminine warnings. Warnings that there are millions of ordinary Indians who need real education, not the play schools run by rarefied officers' wives. The squalor of the lower castes is too easily eclipsed by the dazzling wealth of Indian princes Sepoys deserved 'the highest encourage and consideration' And British officers, often sent out raw at eighteen, need more time to acclimatize both physically and mentally, else they may turn cruel and reckless" (Robinson). Young, née Ridgway, married Thomas Postans, an officer in the Bombay native infantry, in 1833, and early in 1834 accompanied him to Cutch, a remote area of western India. "There she gathered material on the region and its peoples, their customs, religion, manufactures, and literary and musical traditions, which she incorporated into Cutch, or, Random Sketches (1839) Marianne Postans's life in India was cut short by the sudden death of her husband in 1846. She returned to England, where, on 8 July 1848, she married an army surgeon, William Henry Young" (ODNB). She travelled with him to the Crimea, writing an account of her experiences, and in 1857 published her last book, The Moslem Noble, an appeal for greater sympathy between British and Indians which was coldly received after the Mutiny. Robinson, Wayward Women, pp. 220-1; not in Riddick. Artikel-Nr. 117355
