Fox Editing Classics presents this newlly edited and designed publication of Elizabeth Gaskell's short story collection. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865), while better known for her 1857 biography of Charlotte Brontë and her still-popular novels, such as Cranford (1851-1853) and Wives and Daughters (1864-1866), her literary works also included several Gothic ghost stories. Curious, if True, originally published in 1861, collects five of these "strange tales": "The Old Nurse's Story" was written in 1852. "The Poor Clare" was first published in Charles Dickens' periodical Household Words in three parts in 1856. "Lois the Witch" was first published in Charles Dickens' magazine All the Year Round in three parts in October 1859. "The Grey Woman" was published in the short story collection Lois the Witch and Other Tales in 1861. "Curious, if True" was written in 1860 and first published as the title story of this collection in 1861.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, known as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer, born on September 29, 1810, in England. Her works provide a comprehensive portrayal of Victorian society, focusing on various social classes, including the impoverished. Gaskell's first novel, Mary Barton, was published in 1848 and received acclaim for its vivid depiction of industrial life and social issues. She went on to write several other notable works, such as North and South, Cranford, and Ruth, which also reflect her interest in the challenges faced by different societal groups. Gaskell's writing often examined class, gender, and moral questions, making her an influential figure in 19th-century English literature. She married William Gaskell in 1832, and together they had five children: Margaret Emily, Julia Bradford, Marianne, Florence Elizabeth, and William. Gaskell passed away on November 12, 1865, at the age of 55. Her works have inspired numerous adaptations, including films like The Followers and Cousin Phillis. She was the daughter of William Stevenson and Elizabeth Holland.
