Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Scarce oversized cloth hardcover, [20] + 390 pages. Weight 940g. Ex-university reference library (stamped 'withdrawn'), most library markings including external stamps on outer page edges scribbled over in black marker. Otherwise book is clean, untanned, with unmarked text, firmly bound. Boards show faint handling marks, a bit of scuffing to edges. Issued without a dust jacket. -- "The background to the documents reprinted here consists of the entire history of the dismal relationships between Christians and Jews since the 1st century C.E. Until very recently, these relationships have generally been antagonistic, hostile, and cold at best; Christian church policy was more often than not based on the assumption that Jews no longer had a right to exist as a separate autonomous religious community. Hence Jews were almost always subjected to both formal and informal pressures aimed at forcing them to convert to Christianity - in addition to the periods when they were subjected to active persecution and massacres. As a result, Jews have generally perceived any 'pressure to convert' as a not very subtle form of anti-Semitism and of persecution, and have responded to it by defending themselves against this perceived attack as best they can in their current circumstances. It has only been since WW2 in the USA that Jews have been able to use the full panoply of legal measures to defend themselves against the various sorts of individual and institutionalized anti-Semitism that still exist in America." (from the Introduction) --- Contents: Introduction; Missionary and Cult Movements / Annette Daum; Jews and the Cults: A Bibliography / Jack Nusan Porter; Kids in Cults / Irvin Doress and Jack N. Porter; From Hinduism Back to Judaism / M. Glazerson; Statement on Jews and Israel / Sun Myung Moon; 'The Children of Cults' / Rodney Clapp; 'Cultists Held No Threats to Jews' / The Washington Post, March 25, 1977; 'Science, Sin, and Sponsorship' / Irving Louis Horowitz; 'The Rev.
