You have been to Bath. You have stood in front of the Roman Baths, walked across Pulteney Bridge, looked up at the Royal Crescent, and done everything a visit to this city is supposed to involve. And yet somewhere around mid-afternoon, with a bag from a shop on Milsom Street and a queue still fresh in your memory, you found yourself wondering whether you had actually seen the city at all. That feeling was not imagination. It was a signal.
Bath has been showing most of its visitors the same surface for generations. The landmarks are magnificent. The architecture is extraordinary. But the city that lives just behind all of that, in its tucked-away courtyards, its narrow passages, its quiet yards where the noise of the street drops away within three steps, that Bath has been waiting patiently for the right kind of visitor to notice it.
Most people never do. Not because it is difficult to find, but because nobody told them where to look.
This guide changes that. Written specifically for travellers who prefer depth over breadth, quiet over crowds, and the pleasure of genuine discovery over the satisfaction of a completed list, it takes you through forty named spaces across eight distinct areas of Bath, none of them on the standard visitor circuit, all of them worth every minute you spend in them. Whether you are planning your first visit or your fifth, this guide will give you a version of the city that most people who have been there many times have never found.
Here is a glimpse of what is waiting inside:

A tucked-away courtyard beside one of Bath's most famous addresses, where the noise of the surrounding streets disappears entirely and the oldest stone in the city meets you at close quarters
A narrow passage in the heart of the Georgian quarter that bends midway along its length, concealing its far end and creating a small but genuine moment of discovery with every visit
A sunken lane on the southern slopes that predates the Georgian city entirely, with courts pressed into its banks that feel more like countryside than city
A mews yard in the Pulteney Quarter whose cobbled surface turns into something close to a mirror after rain, reflecting the low buildings and rooflines above in the wet stone below
A green corridor within fifteen minutes of the city centre where the noise of Bath disappears so completely that the place feels genuinely wild
Five curated walking routes that connect the guide's spaces into half-day loops, each with its own character and rhythm

A full seasonal chapter showing exactly how each space changes across spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and what each season gives that the others cannot

This guide also covers everything you need before you arrive, from getting to Bath and finding the right place to stay, to what to wear, when to go, and how to move through the city in a way that makes the most of every hour you have there.
Bath has always had these spaces. They have simply been waiting for someone willing to slow down long enough to find them.
If you are that kind of traveller, this guide was written for you. Pick it up, pack it in your bag, and go and find the Bath that most visitors never see.

Shopbeschreibung

We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
