Three continents. Three cultures with no contact between them. The same creature.

In the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, indigenous nations have spoken for millennia of a towering, hair-covered figure that walks upright through the timber. In the deep Amazon, rubber tappers and indigenous hunters describe a bellowing, foul-smelling beast whose hide no arrow can pierce. In the sandstone gorges of eastern Australia, Aboriginal oral traditions stretching back sixty thousand years tell of something large, powerful, and aggressive watching from the tree line.

Bigfoot. The Mapinguari. The Yowie.

They have never been placed side by side — until now.

Country Cousins is the first volume in the Cryptid Comparative Series, and it takes a approach that no single-creature study can: it lays three of the world's most persistent cryptid reports next to one another and asks what the patterns reveal. Why does the reported body size track with climate in exactly the way a biologist would predict? Why does the aggression level correlate with habitat pressure? Why do the foot morphologies differ in ways that match local terrain — a detail no storyteller would think to invent?

This is not a book of advocacy. It does not argue that these creatures are real. Nor does it dismiss a global phenomenon that has persisted across thousands of years, hundreds of cultures, and tens of thousands of independent witnesses. Instead, it occupies the harder, more honest space between belief and dismissal — examining the testimony alongside paleontology, behavioral ecology alongside the psychology of perception, indigenous knowledge alongside forensic methodology.

The result is a picture more complicated and more compelling than either side of the debate typically allows. The similarities are too specific to ignore. The differences are too ecologically calibrated to be coincidence. And the central absence — no body, no bones, no confirmed DNA — remains the question that defines the entire phenomenon.
The map still has empty spaces.

Country Cousins looks into them with clear eyes and an open mind.
