Countdown at College Station is an action-adventure novel with some unusual twists. The antagonist, an al Qaeda extremist, is killed by his own cohorts in a squabble over leadership, but the new leader is even more fanatic and escalates the terror to nuclear weapons. The protagonist, a nuclear engineering professor at Texas A&M, out-smarts the bad guys and races to save American cities from unthinkable disaster. ALL OF THIS IS THE SUB-PLOT. The real story, which readers do not realize until the ending, is about depression. It’s really about how one man risks his life to save hundreds of thousands, and in so doing, overcomes his illness.

Harry Haines is a retired professor. Most people in the Texas Panhandle know him for his work as head of the department of music at WTAMU. A graduate of Oklahoma City University, he also holds the M.Ed and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oklahoma. After 15 years as a high school band director, he entered college teaching: 3 years at Western Illinois University, 6 years at Phillips University, and 22 years at West Texas A&M University.Dr. Haines is a prolific writer; he has 22 published books, the last 8 of which are all fiction. His novels have won four big national contests.Orphan, a story about horseracing, published in 2008, won the Mayhaven Award for Fiction. His second book, Texas Panic, a thriller about the beef industry, won the fiction contest of the National Writers Association. His eighth novel, Countdown at College Station, was released in November, 2015.Dr. Haines, now retired, continues to live in Canyon, Texas.
