Nineties was a roaring time for the country. A lot happened then which was instrumental in the country being what it is today from policies to Bollywood taking a new form and shape to the way people started thinking differently. The Nineties child grew up on a different dose of memories and this is what Tharun James Jimani is talking about in his debut book, Cough Syrup Surrealism. The protagonist is young and almost lost. Charlie wants more but doesnt know what that is. He is constantly drifting between wanting to live and the urge to end his life. Not to forget that he is still stuck in the nineties (given he is a nineties child) when it is clearly 2006. He is also in love, with the beautiful Paloma. The 90s references are something that almost everyone can relate with and Jimani has not discounted any of those throughout the book. From the Maruti aspiration to MTV pop culture to the movies of the 90s, Jimani has almost got it all covered. The writing is racy and can tend to get repetitive at times, but given the plot and the characterization of Charlie, the reader can ignore the monotony. Description: Cough Syrup Surrealism, by Tharun James Jimani, is a psychedelic tale about college life and growing up, featuring Charlie, whose life is turned upside down when two girls mistake him for a drug dealer, throwing him into the fast-paced world drugs, sex and rock n roll. Summary Of The BookCharlie is the protagonist of Jimanis Cough Syrup Surrealism. He is characterized, at least by Mao (Charlie`s imaginary friend), as a non-suicidal, non-depressed, delusional coward, who is too scared to even cut himself while shaving. No one is aware of Mao, he is a figment of Charlies imagination. Charlie, leads a solitary life and he divides much of his time between secretly loving a girl named Paloma and despising himself. Much of Charlies existence is spent in fantasy and escapism, either through music videos from the nineties or by simply wishing he was someone else. He also spends much of his time typing out suicide notes. One day, Charlies routine is rudely interrupted when two girls mistake him for a drug dealer. All of a sudden, Charlie finds himself surrounded by debauchery, drugs and rock music. He is pushed into a world where uses drugs, drug money is prevalent and also plays in a rock band. Towards the end of the book, Charlie is propelled into deciding what exactly it is that he wants for himself. After reading Cough Syrup Surrealism, many readers will be provided with a rare snapshot of the music scene in Chennai in 2006. They will also become familiar with pop culture and movies of the 1990s. Cough Syrup Surrealism was published in 2013 by Fingerprint Publishing. Printed Pages: 240. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 84830
Inhaltsangabe: Ever think you cling to pop culture like infant to teat, that your unwavering devotion to movies and music and literature merely and inadequately, compensate for that first Freudian nip and slip? That's Mao's theory anyway. But nobody listens to Mao because...well, because Mao is a figment of Charlie's imagination, his alter-ego, if you will.
